The Way of Life Method teaches us to raise sound, strong, and spirited companions. It is a way of life and a way of handling our dogs through this way of life. Handling matters a great deal to our relationship and connection with our dogs. How we handle can shape a dog’s entire experience of an event or situation. Handling is how we hold our bodies, our minds, and our thoughts when in the presence of our dogs. Before expecting our dogs to obey and respond to us, it matters that we be self-aware and reflect on how our dogs might be experiencing our handling.
Handling involves body posture and I’ve witnessed the difference this makes in handling any kind of dog and in performing any kind of sport. In Way of Life dog training classes, there is as much comment and feedback on the human’s posture as there is on how the dog is being handled.
Starting from the top…
How are you holding your head?
Where are your eyes gazing?
Are your shoulders down and relaxed?
Is your chest out and strong?
How are you holding your core?
Is your handle light and confident or gripped and sweaty?
Are you breathing from your nose, throat, chest, or belly?
Are your legs strong yet flexible, and your feet grounded?
Is there pride and strength in your body?
Do you exude what is called “command presence”?
It matters how we handle physically and mentally and emotionally as well. Our thoughts and feelings are also felt by our canine. When handling, are you aware of the energy between you and your dog? Do you handle your dog as a separate entity or as two bodies with one mind? Where are you when handling your dog? And how are you feeling?
When we are joyful and present with our dogs… when we handle with strength and grace… when we are as much aware of them as we are of ourselves… what a difference this makes for our dog’s experience of what it’s like being with us. The Way of Life Method is a way of life and a manner of handling. It matters how we handle. Keep that in mind and watch happens to your dog and your bond. Happy Handling!
